Should you get your laptop screen repaired?

If your screen has cracked or completely broken (showing a black screen, etc) and you need to get the laptop working again and your deciding whether you should replace the screen or buy a new laptop there are a few factors that might be considered.

If you would like to keep your existing laptop it might be good idea to contact a computer technician , for them to do the laptop screen repair. There may be a wait on the repair of your screen as there is a different screen for each model and most likely will need to be ordered.

Laptop screens vary in price depending on the model and if its a touchscreen.

On average a screen replacement could cost anywhere from $80 – $150+ (for the more common screens on normal PC laptops) and then the charge of the technician to install it. MAC screen replacements can be much more expensive as they can use the retina display panels and can range from $250 – $500+

The difficulty of the laptop screen replacement is dependent on the laptop model, each has there level of difficulty to replace. Some screens can be replaced directly by taking off the surrounding plastic panel where other ones need the disassembly of the whole laptop to replace.

If the laptop screen is slightly cracked and not a big deal you could probably still continue to use the laptop as it is if its not too much of a bother it should continue to work as it is but over time it might get worse.

Another idea if the laptop stays in the same position on the table is to hook up a spare monitor to the laptop with the VGA cord or HDMI cable.

Should you buy a new laptop?

If there is damage done to the actual graphics chip on the motherboard that’s causing the screen not to work thou , this might not work and to diagnose this problem you can plug a spare monitor into the VGA or HDMI port in the laptop and see if you get a signal on boot-up (if it doesn’t show this is generally an indication).

If this is the case you might find the best route is to purchase a new laptop or replace the existing motherboard (if it isn’t too expensive) because with most motherboards the graphics card is built onto the motherboard and its not easy to replace as you would with a normal desktop computer.

Going with a new laptop will mean that you will need to do a data recovery from your broken laptop to restore it onto your new laptop. If there is nothing wrong with the hard drive it will not be a complicated task.
