Replacing a MacBook Keyboard
Due to the design of the MacBook changing the keyboard is time consuming, it is quicker and easier to replace the whole top case assembly (palmrest) which includes the trackpad and possibly battery but will be a bit more expensive.
Steps for keyboard replacement
- You might want to backup your data before the replacement
- Power off the MacBook
- Opening the case and disconnecting the battery
- Removal of the logic board and other components
- Removal of the keyboard assembly which includes unscrewing or uncliping from the top case , some models have rivets. (If replacing the whole palmrest assembly it wouldnt require the removal of they keyboard and screws, etc..) (There can be around 100 screws when removing the keyboard.)
- Removal of the keyboard
- Clean out around the palmrest frame
- Position the new keyboard
- Secure it with screws, etc.
- Reinstall the logic board and all other components
- Reattach the bottom case
- Test to make sure all keys are working correctly

Yes, you can replace the keyboard on your Mac but its best to get a professional or someone that has experience in changing them as they can be pretty complicated and sensitive.
You can potentially damage your Mac if not done correctly.
How much does it cost to replace a MacBook keyboard?
You will probably be looking at anything between $200 and $400 or so to replace a MacBook keyboard through a repair shop.
Older models are generally more affordable.
Newer models are more complicated and so can cost more and may require the whole palmrest.
