Can a PC motherboard be repaired?
PC motherboards can generally be repaired, but depends on the extent of the the damage. Some are simple fixes and then they gradually get more complex. Worst case is a replacement motherboard.
- Basic – Loose connections, BIOS issues or capacitor replacements
- Severe – Burnt components, VRM overheating or damage to circuit.
How to troubleshoot a desktop motherboard?
- This usually involves starting with a visual inspection to see if you can see anything wrong.
- Checking the power supply to see if it is working and if possible see if its supplying the correct voltages, etc..
- Testing RAM to see if its faulty , maybe trying one stick at a time.
- Check see if the CPU is overheating
- Check if graphics card is faulty or connected properly
- Checking the BIOS
Will I lose everything if I replace the motherboard?
You shouldnt lose any data when changing the motherboard as the storage devices are usually removed.
Changing the motherboard however can cause Bitlocker to activate and ask for a code if you have it running in the first place. We will need to make sure there is a key connected to your Microsoft account to reactivate it.
You may also lose activation because it is linked to the board. Sometimes you can restore the activation but sometimes not and a new Windows key will need to be purchased.
If there is damage done to the storage devices when the motherboard has gone funny that might be another issue and may need Data Recovery services.
